I believe CS Lewis is the most intellectual source for seeking truth and eloquently documenting his thoughts, journey, and findings in his writings.
In the first letter from the demon instructor to his student Wormwood, he speaks of a time when followers of Christ who wanted to distract and rob them of eternal life in heaven were convinced by television and modern communication that proof or actual evidence had no value. My interruption was that Wormwood no longer had to convince them of anything. He just needed to reinforce their delusion continually.
“Don’t waste time making him think materialism is true! Make him think it is strong, stark, or courageous—that it is the philosophy of the future. That’s the sort of thing he cares about.” (Screwtape Letters, p. 7-8)
“It is hard to imagine a more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people that pay no price for being wrong.” Thomas Sowell
Great emphasis has been put on formal education in our culture to achieve the level of materialism considered a success in this society. So those demonic forces working among us only have to reinforce the delusion that acquired materialism is a sign of power, strength, and blessing by God.
We often hear people say, “I am very fortunate. God has blessed me!” I, too, once fell into that category. But I only found peace with God when everything I had was gone in a flash, and all I had left was Him.
Jesus told him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Some things that offer us stumbling blocks in our walk are wrapped up in materialism or the fear of losing material things that we just can’t do without.
Jesus told the young man, “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, you shall Honor your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Every day, we face challenges in this world where Satan, his demons and helpers rule to lie, accept a lie, or allow a truth to be squashed or swept under the rug. We have become a society complacent to the extent we can’t live up to the requirements Jesus laid out for the young man. We are now trying to sweep the elephant in the room under the rug. Our friends, family, church, pastor, doctor, employer, boss and government are telling us to be accepted, happy, and part of this society; we must ignore the hump in the rug.
Worst of all the sins Jesus told the young man to avoid, we live in times where the ruling force demands our silence in the face of murder; because it fits their agenda, not God’s. We got here by making small compromises CS Lewis had the insight to warn us about what the world perceived as success. The person we lie to the most is ourselves, believing that God will be okay with it.
